Black And United!

Currently Under Construction

Welcome to the temporary home page of Black&United, the new information portal for the Afro-British community in the UK!

Please bear with us as this site is currently under development and will be added to in the coming weeks.

In 1555 John Hawkins a resident of Deptford, SE London, sailed to Sierra Leone on his first slave voyage. By his second journey he'd recruited his cousin, another Deptford resident, Sir Francis Drake and had been loaned a ship by his business partner Queen Elizabeth the First.

How ironic is it, that during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the Second that we approach the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the British slave trade on the 25th of March this year. Although the slave trade in its entirety and slavery itself did not end on that date, it was the beginning of the end.

Much will be said and credit given to the white abolitionists Clarkson, Wilberforce&Sharpe, but what about the Black Abolitionists Olaudah Equiano, Mary Prince&Ottabah Cuguano?

Forthcoming Event

On Saturday 24th March 2007, the final leg of the 200 mile Meridian Walk from Greenwich Park to Westminster will take place.

We start at 9am and plan to arrive in Westminster at 12pm midday. From there we'll join the Walk of Witness from Whitehall to Kennington Park where we will arrive at 2pm. At Kennington Park there will be speeches by leaders from the West Indies Ghana and the UK.

Let us unite and share this opportunity to remember the past and appreciate how far we have come and how much more we must do.
